What is EMI shielding tape?

EMI shielding is a vitally important part of our modern world because it helps electronics function in proximity to one another. Without this sort of protection, many of the technological advances we benefit from would have never been achieved. Whether that allows everyone to have a smartphone or whether that means a single car can have hundreds of electronics and computer chips all within one contained vehicle, EMI shielding promotes these developments.

EMI shielding Considering how vastly unique and different electronic devices can be, from medical to recreational and even military applications, EMI shielding needs to be versatile and customizable. A critical aspect of EMI customizations is material selection.

One of the most used materials is EMI film and foil, often referred to as EMI shielding tape. Metallic foil is often used to shield equipment wires. A technician wraps wire bundles inside foil during production to protect them from EMI. Connectors often also have shielding foil attached to the metal covers, ensuring complete protection of the device.

Shielding foil tape can resist corrosion while also being flame retardant. Because shielding tape is flat, it is an ideal choice for shielding around shapes and corners. The material is also embossed for easy use. The most familiar places to find shielding tape are keyboards, electric call components, cables, shielding rooms, and electro-medical devices.

The tape is highly versatile and important for protecting electronics. However, this does not mean that it is ideal for all shielding applications. There is a wide range of materials, from EMI gaskets to EMI shielding foam, so picking the suitable material is essential for protecting against EMI.
