EMI Shielding

From RFQ Chaos to a Shippable Part: The ECS Custom Process for EMI Shielding

EMI Shielding

How we engineer cost, maximize yield, and manage quote validity—even when the silver market tries to disrupt the plan.

Customers often send us an overwhelming amount of information on a project—or sometimes almost nothing at all—and expect us to translate that into a workable, cost-effective part immediately. We accept this reality because our job is to review the data, fill in the gaps, and engineer a solution that works for your application and your budget. Whether EMI shielding of Gaskets, we are the team that can help.

However, there is an operational constraint that often collides with typical procurement timelines: the volatility of raw materials. When a conductive gasket relies on silver, the price doesn't sit still for weeks while an RFQ circulates through internal approval loops.

Running a successful custom gasket job requires more than just manufacturing capability; it requires a synchronization of engineering choices and market timing. We quote fast, we control waste to manage costs, and we are transparent about quote validity because the silver market forces us to be.

What "Custom" Means at ECS

At East Coast Shielding, "custom" is not just a synonym for cutting a shape to a print; it represents a deliberate intersection of geometry, build decisions, and yield maximization. All work, including our leading EMI shielding, is created to your specs. When a part is "finicky"—perhaps it has an intricate, thin-walled design, requires a large-format housing, or uses costly conductive material—the manufacturing method defines the cost far more than the raw material price alone. If a supplier simply cuts exactly what you drew without analyzing the material yield, you are paying for the scrap that ends up on the floor. We define custom as the process of analyzing a design to find the build strategy that ensures the part performs as required while keeping the unit cost viable for your program.

The ECS Process for Custom EMI Gasket Jobs

We utilize a structured, transparent workflow designed to take the chaos out of the RFQ process and filter it into a shippable part without confusion or surprise delays. By adhering to these steps, we ensure that every variable, from dimensional tolerances to material stability, is accounted for before we ever cut a piece of silicone.

  • Step 1 — Intake and Review:We review whatever format you send us, but we immediately look for the specific variables that drive cost and manufacturability. We do not require a perfect RFQ to begin the conversation, but we do need to identify the project's critical constraints. If data is missing, we don't stall; we move the project forward by identifying exactly what is needed to proceed.
  • Step 2 — Review + Clarify:Once we have the request, we analyze it to prevent misquotes and rework that could delay the project later. We ask targeted, specific questions to clarify dimensions, material types, and application constraints before we commit numbers to paper. This step ensures we quote the part you actually need, rather than guessing at specifications.
  • Step 3 — Cost Engineering Through Yield:This is the stage where we differentiate ourselves from a commodity shop by actively engineering the cost out of the part. We do not blindly quote the geometry provided; if there is a more efficient way to build it that saves you money, we will use it.For example, we will often vulcanize corners on a large gasket rather than cutting the full configuration from a single sheet. If you cut a large, open-center gasket from one piece of material, you create a massive amount of scrap in the center that you ultimately pay for. By cutting strips and vulcanizing the corners, we achieve the same functional outcome and sealing performance, while drastically reducing material waste.
  • Step 4 — Quoting and Market Reality:Once the build strategy is set, we issue a quote that reflects the current market reality for raw materials. For standard commercial silicones, this is straightforward. However, for conductive elastomers, pricing is tethered to the cost of metals like silver. Because silver markets fluctuate, we cannot offer open-ended validity on these quotes without risking significant losses.
  • Step 5 — PO, Acknowledgment, and Transparency:Once you place a Purchase Order, the uncertainty ends because we acknowledge every order with a firm confirmation. We provide an anticipated ship date immediately, so you know exactly when the clock starts and when to expect the parts. You are never left wondering if the PO was received or if the timeline is slipping.
  • Step 6 — Status Updates During Lead Time:Throughout the production cycle, we maintain status transparency so you can manage your own internal stakeholders. If you need an update on the status of your parts in the manufacturing process, we provide it without hesitation. We believe that a silent supplier is a risk, so we keep the lines of communication open until the box leaves our dock.
  • Step 7 — Ship + Follow-Through:We ship to the acknowledged date and ensure the paperwork matches the product perfectly. This final step closes the loop, ensuring that your receiving department processes the order smoothly and your line stays moving.

The Volatility Stress Test: Why Silver Breaks the Standard Process

For 90% of our projects, the seven steps above are linear and predictable. However, there is one external factor that can break the chain between Step 4 (Quoting) and Step 5 (PO) if not managed correctly: raw material volatility.
The process we just described relies on price stability. But when a conductive system is silver-driven, stability evaporates. The market moves too fast for a standard "30-day quote" to survive. To keep your project on track, you need to understand exactly why we have to compress our validity windows for these specific materials.

The Reality of Market Movement

To illustrate why quotes cannot remain open indefinitely, look at this timeline of the Silver Futures market (COMEX: SIW00) over a short, volatile period. These numbers show how quickly the ground shifts:

  • Dec 11, 9:29 AM EST: The price sat at 62.96 USD.
  • Dec 23, 12:03 PM EST: The price jumped to 70.69 USD (+12.28% in 12 days).
  • Jan 16, 12:15 PM EST: The trend continued upward to 89.14 USD.
  • Jan 28, 11:42 AM EST: The price hit 114.01 USD.

ECS Quote Validity Policy

To manage this volatility fairly, ECS implemented specific validity rules effective 11/11/2025, triggered because our supplier's "silver factor has risen 10 points within a 2-week period." The rules are strict but necessary for stability.

  • General Silver-Related Items: "Prices for silver-related items will no longer be able to be held for longer than 1 week from the date of your provided quote."
  • Specific High-Content Materials: For Pure silver silicone ECS7000, ECS7000F, and ECS7000HD, the quote is valid for 1 day from the quote date.
  • Expiration: After validity expires, "a new quote will be required before placing a PO."
This policy applies to the following materials:
  • ECS5000 (M83528 TYPE B)
  • ECS5000F (M83528 TYPE D)
  • ECS8000 (M83528 TYPE A)
  • ECS8000F (M83528 TYPE C)
  • ECS8000-85 (M83528 TYPE K)
  • ECS7000 (M83528 TYPE E)
  • ECS7000F (M83528 TYPE F)
  • ECS7000HD (M83528 TYPE H)
  • ECS4000 (M83528 TYPE L)
  • ECS4000F
  • ECS6000 (M83528 TYPE M)
  • ECS6000F

Implementation: A Playbook for Buyers

If you are managing a program that uses these materials, you need to operationalize this policy to prevent delays. If the quote includes silver-related materials, treat it as a 7-day decision window, not a placeholder for next month's budget meeting. If you are buying ECS7000, ECS7000F, or ECS7000HD, treat it as a same-day approval cycle. If internal approvals routinely exceed validity, the risk isn't just price change—it is the friction of re-quoting that delays your PO entry and pushes out your ship date.

Why Customers Choose ECS for Custom Jobs

Engineers and buyers return to ECS because our process is built for reliability and operational clarity, not just volume manufacturing. We understand the consequences of a delayed answer in this industry, so we prioritize speed and accuracy in our communication. We answer the phone and reply to emails quickly because we know you are on a deadline, and we don't sit on RFQs. Crucially, we actively seek yield improvements—like vulcanized corners—to lower your part cost, providing you with a partner invested in the efficiency of your project.
