Options for Wire Oriented Silicone

Wire Oriented Silicone, EMI shield

Wire-oriented silicone is manufactured in a wide range of options, but all types combine high levels of shielding with strong, reliable environmental protection. These tools successfully incorporate vertically oriented wires that can pierce the flat faces of elastomers. They are trusted to provide roughly 100 contact points per square centimeter. Most commonly, wire-oriented silicone contains certain materials:

  • Sponge silicone variants
  • Fluorosilicone
  • Solid silicone
  • Flame retardant solid silicone
  • Flame retardant sponge silicone
  • Solid silicone (with wire or fluorosilicone edges)

Besides the varying material options, there are also options for strip and sheet production, which is often die cut into final gasket profiles (to exact customer specifications). Wire-oriented silicone fabrication is highly customizable, meaning that products can have wire-free widths with cross-sections only on a single edge (or both). Final products can create perfect pressure seals, which act as an EMI shield. Silicone helps drastically reduce the compressive forces required for a tight-fitting gasket.

For highly specific jobs, it is possible to create dual material variants that provide more advantages than a single material part. Dual materials engender characteristics like fluorosilicone gaskets while keeping prices down. This is done by bonding a wire-free fluorosilicone edge with standard sheets. It is important to remember that a fabricated gasket has a containment resistant and wire-free edge that is suitable to use with a loose wire that could potentially cause problems with gaskets (especially those subjected to hydrocarbons and solvents, which cause gaskets to swell and soften).
